Djibouti Covid - 19 Requirements
T
hankfully Djibouti has not been greatly impacted by the Covid -19 Pandemic.  The Djiboutian government quickly closed the borders and aggressively treated cases.  On July 17th, Djibouti reopened the borders because the the relatively low detection rate in the general population (less than 1% as of August 13th).

The Djibouti Governments requires everyone entering the country to either be tested at the airport or they must have documentation of a negative Covid-19 test that is less than 72 hours old.  The results of the nasal swab test given at the airport are reportedly ready an hour after testing.  If you test positive you must quarantine for 2 weeks or leave the country.  If you test negative you are free to enter the country but maintain protective measures such as social distancing, hand washing and wearing masks.  Because of these safeguards, we are hopeful that the risk of contacting the disease remains low in Djibouti, however the virus is still being detected in the community.

Rushing Water Adventures (RWA) is uniquely situated to provide personalized trips that will keep you isolated from crowds and minimize the risk of contacting the disease.  RWA has an  Epidemiologist and Medical Technologist on staff who are working to keep you safe while you explore the wonders of Djibouti.   We are continually screening our guides and drivers for symptoms.  We can provide personalized trips for those want less contact with others, or we will continue to combine small groups or individuals together to provide more saving on the costs of our trips.

"During our stay in Djibouti we did several adventures with Rushing water Adventures. We had Ken and Paula as our guides and they are so knowledgeable! My favorite adventures were at Ras Ali and Turtle Island. When we arrived at Ras Ali, it was low tide, so we quickly set off to explore the tide pools. Ken showed us all of the unique wildlife that exists right on the edge of the ocean. We then set off into the ocean with snorkels and kayaks. The reef there is absolutely stunning with an abundance of diverse creatures and colorful coral. They have one glass bottom kayak which was perfect for my kids to ride along in and look down at the beauty! The food was brought down to our location course by course, and much of it was taken straight out of the ocean! At the end of the day we slept under the stars on comfortable cots inside of mosquito nets. I loved hearing the waves crash on on the shore as I slept.

We also visited turtle Island with Rushing Water Adventures. In this excursion, we kayaked out to an Island looking for Turtles. Ken knew right were to look for the wildlife. On our trip I saw at least 15 turtles, several of which swam right under me. We also walked along the beach and found blue spotted sting rays. What an amazing adventure!

I highly recommend Rushing Waters Adventures if you are looking for an exciting African adventure!"  Johanna

"Learning and growing. At 65 I'm slowing down but this trip was a rush. I have never been on a trip with more knowledgeable and hospitable tour guides. Ken and Paula Gradall knew the country and its people. As I walked through the streets of the capital city with Ken it became clear that he was known as "the white man who speaks Somali, evidently a rare thing. His humble and wise demeanor opened doors to us as visitors that we could never have entered without him.

I have a wonderful memory of sleeping on the beach after a day of snorkeling in a beautiful and colorfully pristine coral reef. The sea-life too was beautiful and varied. It is always special to see marine life that you've never seen before. Ken is a marine biologist and a teacher who had patient answers for all my questions.

The rustic resort served delicious meals and we watched our dinner come off the boat and carried up the hill to be prepared - a grouper and an octopus which I think ended up in a salad.

Beautiful sunsets and sunrises - and even better company.

If you are fortunate enough to take a trip with Rushing Waters, be sure to see Lake Assal, Turtle Island, and take the walking tour of the Capital.

I highly recommend Rushing Waters. It is, perhaps, the best value for an unusual adventure out there."  Dave

"Ken arranged a 10 days trip through Djibouti for us. We communicated through email about ourselves and the things we were interested in doing. He personally gave us a tour of Djiboutiville and supplied us with a very capable guide and driver. We had the luxury of touring the country leisurely so were able to enjoy more of the sites. We visited Lac Abbe for two nights, not just the one, because we wanted to walk to the lake one day. We drove to Assal and to Foret du Day for a two-night stay. There, he arranged for a wonderful hike through a canyon to Bankouale, a hike of beauty not to be missed. We visited Tadjoura for two nights, including Obock, and visited Sable Blanc for snorkeling. We are vegetarian so the food options at the camps were a bit repetitive, but our guide quickly understood and helped out. At the end, we took the local ferry back to Djiboutiville, rather than the road, which was a thrill, something different. Ken was great in adjusting to changes - switching hotels in Djibouti city, adjusting our accommodations at Tadjoura, and so on - and always communicative."
"Ken took us snorkeling at Arta Plage where there’s a beautiful coral reef. He showed us around and had much knowledge about the area, it was a very cool experience. 10/10 would recommend, Ken is a great guide and very friendly!" - Tomo
